Made in Canada. Faster Canadian shipping. Reliable domestic supply without cross-border delays.
Extover® is an environmentally friendly extinguishing and containment agent developed for lithium-ion battery incidents and Class D fires.
Made from post-consumer recycled pure glass, each bag provides a lightweight, free-flowing material that can help control fire, absorb thermal energy and electrolyte, and reduce the risk of re-ignition.
How Extover® Works
- Smothers: Covers the affected battery and limits its exposure to oxygen
- Cools: Absorbs thermal energy and helps contain the spread of heat
- Seals: Forms a protective barrier that helps prevent re-flaming
- Absorbs: Takes up leaked electrolyte and other fluids
- Contains: Captures vapours and fumes on the granule surface for controlled disposal

Fire Department Starter Recommendation
Extover® is sold by the bag, allowing departments and facilities to purchase the quantity appropriate for their needs.
For initial readiness, CESAT recommends that every fire department maintain a minimum three-bag supply for small damaged, defective or recalled lithium-battery incidents.
Larger batteries, multiple batteries and more serious thermal-runaway events may require substantially more material and additional emergency-response measures.
Order one bag or select the 3-Bag Starter Kit for minimum fire-department readiness.
Shipping and taxes are extra. Shipping is available across Canada. No customs or duties required.
Testing and technical standards
European tested and technically documented
EXTOVER® has been independently examined by European institutions, including KIT, BAM and MPA Dresden, for defined lithium-ion battery and metal-fire applications. It is classified A1 non-combustible under DIN 4102-4. EXTOVER is not represented as UL, ULC or CSA certified.
EXTOVER is a specialized mineral granulate intended to support fire suppression, containment, absorption and safer handling in appropriate applications. Results depend on the battery chemistry, fire size, accessibility, quantity applied and operating conditions. Lithium-ion batteries may continue generating heat or re-ignite after visible flames are suppressed. Users must follow their organization’s procedures, applicable regulations and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Packaging and Transportation Notice
Extover® is a non-combustible packing, containment and absorbent medium. Extover is not, by itself, a certified means of containment.
When Extover is used to prepare eligible batteries for transportation, it must be placed inside an appropriate UN-rated container selected for the battery type, condition, size, mass and applicable transportation regulations.
Recommended Outer Containers
Where an open-head steel drum is appropriate, use a new or serviceable UN 1A2/X-rated drum certified for solids and equipped with a removable steel lid and properly secured bolt-ring closure. The completed package must remain within the drum’s marked maximum gross mass and must be closed according to the drum manufacturer’s instructions.
Examples of drums meeting these general specifications are available from Safety-Kleen Canada, Uline Canada, ICC Compliance Center and Grainger Canada.
Before purchase or use, confirm that the drum is marked 1A2/X for solids, that its maximum gross mass is sufficient for the completed package, and that it is closed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Supplier specifications and availability may change.
Do not purchase a drum and attempt to prepare a DDR battery shipment unless the packaging method has been confirmed by a qualified dangerous-goods professional and the person packing the battery meets the applicable TDG training requirements.
Batteries must be protected against short circuit and unintended movement. Extover should be placed beneath, completely around and above the battery in accordance with the applicable packing instructions.
The use of Extover does not, by itself, make a battery shipment compliant with Transport Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations. Damaged, defective or recalled batteries require specialized packaging, documentation, training and regulatory authorization. Packaging and transportation requirements must be confirmed by a qualified dangerous-goods professional before shipment.
Do not package or transport a battery that is actively burning, undergoing thermal runaway, dangerously hot or actively releasing gases unless the activity is specifically permitted under an approved emergency procedure or regulatory authorization.
These links are provided as examples only and do not constitute an endorsement or confirmation that a particular drum-and-Extover configuration is authorized for transporting damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries. Extover does not manufacture or sell the drums. Users remain responsible for selecting the appropriate means of containment and complying with all applicable transportation requirements.
Preparing damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries for transportation is regulated under Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
Training required for transportation
Anyone classifying, packing, documenting, offering for transport or transporting these batteries must be adequately trained and hold a valid TDG training certificate appropriate to their duties, or perform the work in the presence and under the direct supervision of a properly trained and certified person.
General TDG training may not, by itself, provide the specialized knowledge required to assess and package damaged lithium batteries. Personnel should also receive task-specific instruction covering battery condition assessment, short-circuit protection, approved packaging requirements, Extover placement, package closure, safety marks, documentation and emergency procedures.
Extover® and the purchase of a UN-rated drum do not replace the required TDG training, shipping documentation or regulatory authorization.
